Bazat pe celebrul roman de Kazuo Ishiguro, filmul spune povestea majordomului Stevens, care si-a dedicat viata intreaga stapanului sau, lordul Darlington. Obsedat de perfectiunea serviciilor ale caror coordonator este, Stevens isi ignora propria viata, sacrificandu-si fericirea personala, ce se putea implini printr-o relatie cu miss Kenton, colega sa. A tinut-o la distanta pe aceasta, desi se crease o anumita legatura intre ei.
